Required equipment for Pro-Badge weekends

The following lists are published for information only. Should a list on the website be different from that of a particular Courses’ paperwork then the paper copy should be used.

If there is a challenge providing equipment (such as tents if required for Scout expedition challenge badges) then please speak to your Scout leader as these are typically available within Group stores, alternatively please contact us before the training weekend

The standard common kit plus the course-specific items, below.

All items should be CLEARLY LABELLED with the Cub Scout’s name

  • Complete Uniform
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Pillow
  • Blankets
  • Warm Pyjamas and bed socks
  • A set of clothes that you are happy for your child to get wet in (including shoes)
  • Warm Coat
  • Waterproof coat and trousers
  • Warm jumpers (at least two)
  • T-shirts and trousers, not jeans (at least 3 sets)
  • Socks (lots of spares in case they get wet)
  • Underwear (at least 3)
  • All three different types of shoes are needed:
    • Hiker Boots or Strong Shoes
    • Wellington Boots
    • Trainers (to be worn indoors)
  • Hat and gloves
  • Towel (full size) and wash kit
  • Hairbrush and hair ties if they have long hair
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Tissues
  • Tuck money (in a named purse, no more than £2.00 in change)
  • Dirty washing bag
  • Soft toy
  • Reading book or magazine
  • Day Sack
  • Water Bottle (at least 750ml)
  • NO Mobile Phones, Electronic games, Sweets

A supply of polythene bags is very useful to separate clean/dirty items.

Extra items for this course include a set of warm clothing that your child can go rafting in and potentially get wet in the pond.

  • Set of rafting clothes (shoes, jumper, t-shirt, trousers and underwear)
  • Extra tea towel

Mandatory Kit List
This list is very comprehensive and excludes some personal kit which is listed on the permission to camp form. All of the equipment will be needed for you to be allowed to take part in the second weekend and is required for the first weekend to support planning and discussion on equipment.

Before purchasing any equipment, please talk to your Scout Leader and see what is available from the Troop/Group.

For each team member

  •  General bag for items not being carried on the Expedition, size dependent on additional equipment each participant brings but should be around 50 litres.
  • Daysack (small rucksack) of approximately 30 litres.  Must be able to contain all items for a day hike contained inside a waterproof lining (bin liner).
  • Fully waterproof clothing.  Outer layer coat and trousers.  Showerproof garments are not acceptable due to eventually allowing in water in prolonged wet conditions.
  • Warm headgear to cover head and ears.
  • Footwear –  Walking boots offering ankle protection and with Vibram type soles. NO walking shoes
  • Gloves.
  • A complete set of walking clothing for the first day: Warm socks, underclothes, long sleeved t-shirt (short sleeves only as a vest), trousers (not jeans or track style), jersey or fleece jacket.
  • Complete change of clothing as above for the second day.
  • Sleeping bag.
  • Sleeping mat.
  • Water bottle, at least 1 litre.
  • Plastic Whistle.  
  • Plastic survival bag.
  • Personal first aid kit, contents to be discussed on the first weekend.
  • Emergency food: Chocolate, Kendall Mint Cake, Raisins etc.
  • Matches in waterproof bag or container.
  • Double skinned hike tent, generally this is one for every two participants but may depend on individual and group equipment availability.
  • Torch with spare batteries.
  • Eating equipment, including a plate or mess tin, mug, knife, fork and spoon, tea towel.
  • A spare bin liner.
  • Watch.
  • Writing equipment including a pen, pencil & paper.
  • Camera (phone, disposable or digital) to record any locations or information through the Expedition.

DURING THE FIRST WEEKEND, ALL EQUIPMENT WILL BE HEAVILY SCRUTINISED FOR SUITABILITY. IF IT IS DEEMED UNSUITABLE FOR THE HIKE PARENTS WILL BE CALLED TO REPLACE EQUIPMENT OR COLLECT SCOUT.
